Kang'oma Primary School Sanitation Project
Kang'oma Primary School Sanitation Project
Tuesday, January 24, 2017
The Kang’oma Primary School Water and Sanitation Hygiene Project was implemented in Traditional Authority Tsabango at Kang’oma primary school in Lilongwe. The project drilled a borehole and constructed 6 toilets; 4 for girls and 2 for boys.

The school had no sanitary facilities as toilets fell down with heavy rains. Due to this, pupils used to visit bushes and other nearby surroundings for defecation of body wastes. The lack of proper toilets made the school prone to closure as it left the school premises in very bad state. These sanitary problems led to more pupils, especially children catching infectious diseases such as Cholera and Diarrhea, which affected the quality of education for these pupils. And the percentage of school going girls decreased as they were uncomfortable in using the bushes unlike boys. Other girls were not even attending classes when menstruating since it was hard to keep themselves clean due to lack of proper sanitary facilities and long distances to school.

In view of these problems, discussions were made between Global Hope Mobilization and the community to assist in constructing the toilets and borehole. Therefore, GLOHOMO reached out to Vibrant Village Foundation for financial support to bail out these vulnerable children.

Different activities were carried out to support the project such as: community mobilization and sensitization, subcontracting the Contractor to construct the toilets, gathering construction materials like bricks and river sand by communities through chiefs, digging pits for pit latrines. The community contributed bricks, sand and unskilled labor, the people were fully involved at each level of the project and were also fully involved in the project orientation and preparation stage in sharing roles and responsibilities.

The school enrollment before the project was 1,242 boys and 1,224 girls making a total of 2, 466 pupils. However the school enrolment has increased by 9.6% with the implementation of the water and sanitation project; raising the number of pupil enrollment by 264 making a total of 2,730 pupils. This is a good immediate indicator for the project and it is expected that the enrollment will increase further.
