Global Hope Mobilization (GLOHOMO) with support from UNAIDS Malawi is embarking on a youth social entrepreneurship project which promotes youth leadership on HIV response and management in Nkhotakota and Chiradzulu Districts in Malawi.

The main goal of the project is to contribute towards the goal of getting to zero-zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.

The project also groomed young people to become leader’s n HIV and AIDS prevention and management, so that they can stand up and speak with a collective voice, to demand their rights to prevention, care and support for HIV which will contribute to the implementation of 4 targets of the High level meetings on HIV and AIDS in Malawi.

Each candidate selected a single proposed “UNGASS high level resolution for 2011 on targets and elimination on HIV/AIDS”, target from the four targets that are in line with Malawi:
Target number 1: Reduce Sexual Transmission of HIV by 50% by 2015.
Target number 3: Eliminate New HIV Infections among Children by 2015 and substantially reduce all AIDS and Maternal related deaths.
Target 4: Reach with 15 Million people living with HIV with life savings antiretroviral treatment by 2015.
Target 7: Eliminate Gender inequalities and Gender based abuse and violence and increase capacity of women and girls to protect themselves from HIV Infection.

This project built capacity, skills and knowledge to 20 youth for empowerment to take up leadership positions in HIV response and management. The young people partnered with all relevant stakeholders to implement the projects of their choice. It empowered 20 youths male and female to become change agents, advocating and facilitating scale-up and accelerated HIV prevention and treatment programs and interventions as well as sexual reproductive health and rights. And it was designed to advocate for youth participation in developing HIV programs at the district and regional level that will contribute to the implementation of 4 targets progress targets and elimination commitments in Malawi.

Success Stories

1. 120 Community structures on referring for   HIV and testing were developed at community level.

2. 4, 025 young people were tested for HIV.

3. District Youth Network was formed to spearhead youth work in the district.

4. Through the formed Youth network one young person has been chosen to represent the young people at district level participating in all technical meeting.

5. Increased uptake of Family Planning service by young people in the district health centers.

6. The project facilitated formation of bylaws of protecting girls from marrying at early age (Child Marriage).

The project was being implemented as Pilot project and it is now being scaled up in Chiradzulu district
